Frequently Asked Questions

Night Blossom Nugget Box

  • When will the next Nugget Box class be offerered?

Currently, the first Nugget Box class is still ongoing because personal responsibilities required me to delay the presentation of lesson material. Only after this class is complete and I have been able to incorporate recommended improvements, will it be open again.

I plan to offer the Nugget Box class as a Self-Paced class early in 2010.

  • I was wondering what the box looks like when it is open, will you post a picture of the open box?

The Nugget Box opens flat and it looks very much like a pinwheel pattern. Currently, I do not have a photo of the open box.

I am working on a surprise to reveal in the class when we discuss "What's Inside the Box?" as part of Week 10 in the schedule.

A paper version of the Nugget Box shape is available for you to download. This can be printed, cut out, and folded to simulate your finished stitch results. If you would like me to email you a link to the pattern, just click here to request it.

  • Do I have to use interlock canvas?

If you are going to construct the 3D box, I like the interlock canvas because it will make the finishing much easier. The flaps of the box have a curve that travels along the bias of the canvas and this edge must be turned. A bias edge on woven canvas may become unstable and get overworked during the finishing.

For the box top medallion, woven canvas is fine, but the sides of the finished box run the bias of the canvas (45 degrees) and not the straight of grain. As a quilter would say: the square is on point. Again, the interlock makes this situation much easier in the finish stages.

  • Do I have to stitch on colored canvas?

I like colored canvas. It's fun!

But no, colored canvas is not a requirement. I am providing a custom colored canvas for the Nugget Box because there are areas in the project where the stitches allow the canvas to show through. With dark colors this is a visual benefit.

I really enjoy stitching areas where the backgound interacts with the thread colors. It adds an important dimension to the project.

Check out the four canvas color theme choices here.

  • May I use a smaller mesh canvas?

The 14 mesh interlock creates a nice finished product, but I have to admit, if worked on 18 mesh it would be just as precious; maybe even more so. Wouldn't hold much, but that's beside the point.

If you would like to create your own designs the class material contains several charts just for that purpose. The outline of the box looks like a pinwheel and I have charted it for up to a 30ct linen.

  • I don't want to pick my own threads. Will you send me a list of colors that go with the canvas theme I picked?

Since this project does not have planned kits, I do not have a list of colors. It is much more fun to see what everyones taste and imagination bring forth.

  • I prefer to let others do my finishing. Do you have any recommendations?

Currently, I am not living in an area with a local needlework shop within even an hour drive. I am just plain out of touch right now. So, let this be a call to any shop that works with a finisher to please contact stitcharts. Your information will be posted on this website in the resources section.
